What is a Land Acknowledgement?
A Land Acknowledgement is an intentional and formal statement that recognizes the relationship between Indigenous people and their traditional territories. It serves as a sign of gratitude and respect and recognizes our shared obligation to respect and honour the land we live and work on. Tyendinaga Township Council believes that they are a necessary step toward honouring the original occupants of these lands. The following Land Acknowledgement will be stated at the beginning of each Council Session, public meeting, formal gatherings of Township staff or politicians and any other special event as deemed appropriate.
Tyendinaga Township Land Acknowledgment
We are meeting today on the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee peoples. Tyendinaga Township Council acknowledges our shared obligation to respect, honour and sustain these lands and the natural resources contained within. We honour their cultures and celebrate their commitment to this land. We would also like to acknowledge the Mohawk nation whose traditional and unceded territory we are gathered upon today. Tyendinaga Township is situated on treaty land that is steeped in rich Indigenous history and home to the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte.
