Half Load Season in Effect from February 14 – April 30

A reminder to residents that the half load season will commence soon in the Township of Tyendinaga. Due to the warm weather we are experiencing, the Township’s half load season has been amended and will now run from the period of February 14th to April 30th 2023.

This applies to all roads within the Township of Tyendinaga with the exception of Shannonville Road from Chisholm’s Mills to Roslin and Old Highway #2, from the Tyendinaga Township/Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte boundary to Highway 49 as per the By-law. There is also an exemption to the half-load season along County Road 10 (Deseronto Road) from County Road 2 to Highway 401.

While the reduced load restrictions are in effect, no commercial vehicle or trailer may be operated or drawn upon any road within the Township of Tyendinaga where the weight per axle exceeds 5 tonnes.

In accordance with Township of Tyendinaga By-law 2017-13  and section 122 of the Highway Traffic Act: Reduced load restrictions will be in effect from February 14 to April 30 inclusive, and may be extended at the Township’s discretion.

Reason for weight requirements:

In the spring, as frost comes out of the ground and moisture comes out of the road bed:

  • Roads become softer and weaker;
  • Heavy loads on roads can cause it to sink and break apart, which can lead to permanent damage;
  • Half-load restrictions are put in place to protect our roads and road beds from being damaged;
  • Reduces the need of having to re-build a road after every spring thaw.
