Public Notice – Change in Title from Reeve to Mayor, effective February 6th, 2023

At the February 6, 2023 Regular Council Meeting, Tyendinaga Township Council passed By-law 11-2023 Being a by-law to Change the Titles of Reeve and Deputy Reeve to Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

Tyendinaga Township now joins the rest of Hastings County, changing “Reeve” and “Deputy Reeve” to “Mayor” and “Deputy Mayor”, making it the last of the County’s 14 municipalities to adopt the title change.

What is a Reeve? What is a Mayor?
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the word “Reeve” is defined as a:

  1. a local administrative agent of an Anglo-Saxon king
  2. a medieval English manor officer responsible chiefly for overseeing the discharge of feudal obligations
  3. a) the council president in some Canadian municipalities
    b) a local official charged with enforcement of specific regulations.

Similarly, the word “Mayor” is defined as a:

an official elected or appointed to act as chief executive or nominal head of a city, town, or borough.

Following this change, the Township’s Head of Council will now be known as Mayor Kennelly and Deputy Mayor Lang.
